A mid-century classic reimagined.
Taking inspiration from the design and style of Scandinavian furniture from the mid-century modern era,
we've designed, prototyped and now manufacture the
Wima sideboard,
meaning
'vertical' or
'straight'
in Swahili. Its clean straight lines and crisp angular form is a complimentary
juxtaposition to the erratic but absolutely gorgeous grain of Doum Palm from which it is made.
Native to the coastal regions of Kenya, Doum Palm's beautiful grain structure comprises of
near black, nail-like spots suspended between softer wood fibers. This grain structure makes
Doum Palm incredibly difficult to work with. However, despite all of these difficulties, we
put the utmost care and effort into processing this timber which eventually bears great fruit
once it has been converted into one of our many pieces of furniture.
The Wima Sideboard is diligently constructed using traditional carpentry techniques with the
drawers smoothly running on oiled, traditional wooden drawer rails. The sliding doors with
carefully hand-sculpted handles, travel seamlessly on unassuming ball bearings rolling within
meticulously grooved channels. Finally, the sideboard is polished using our signature natural
oils & waxes. With dividers out of solid timber in the top most drawer and ample storage space
throughout the unit, the Wima sideboard is a perfect addition to any dining space to store all
your fine cutlery for that special dinner.
