A solid timber piece, the Mnara side table is carefully carved and shaped out of large blocks of timber and meticulously put together to boast a monolithic yet beautifully simplistic form. After giving the piece a fine sanding, the smooth surface of the table is finished in our signature natural oils and waxes to bring out the gorgeous natural grain of the timber. The inception piece made from Elgon Teak was a befitting addition to our long-term friend's living space.

An elegance in the simplicity.

When we first prototyped this range of furniture, the form exuded a sense of flow, the outline trickling from the horizontal surfaces into the vertical components as the two planes met inconspicuously around carefully shaped curvaceous edges. The form could then only be described in one word: Waterfall, and in Swahili 'Chemchem'. At a first glance, the Chemchem range of tables appear to have a minimalist and quite simplistic silhouette. Once you take a closer look, you'll notice and appreciate all the carefully hand-sculpted and polished curves and chamfers along the edges of the form. With the complementary diminishing thicknesses on the legs and horizontal surfaces, the tables end up looking quite visually light despite being made from solid timber.

For our inception pieces, we chose the gorgeous Doum Palm, which is native to the coastal regions of Kenya and possesses a beautiful grain structure comprising of near black, nail-like spots suspended between softer wood fibers. The elongated elliptical spots of the Doum Palm running along the grain of the piece accentuates the trickling emotion that this range of furniture evokes. The Chemchem range of tables are diligently constructed using traditional carpentry techniques after which the final form is meticulously exposed by one of our experienced sculptors. Finally, the tables are polished using our signature natural oils & waxes.
